Having no doubt made a bucketload of cash from the success of Angry Birds Space earlier this month (not that it wasn't already swimming in cash), Finnish developer Rovio has acquired a new gaming company as a means of expanding its reach even further.

It has bought out Futuremark Games Studio, the gaming division of benchmarking software company Futuremark - you may well be familiar with Futuremark's 3DMark benchmarking tools.

Mikael Hed, Rovio's CEO, said of the team at Futuremark Games, "They are an incredibly talented and experienced team, and we are thrilled to have them on board."

"Rovio's success is founded on the excellence of our team, and Futuremark Games Studio is going to be a superb addition."

Unified

Futuremark's CEO Jukka Mäkinen threw his two cents in, adding, "I am proud to see the potential of our talented games team recognized by Rovio. Futuremark will now focus on supporting gamers and industry with 3DMark, our professional grade benchmark which, in a new version to be released later this year, will allow unified gaming performance comparison across operating systems and form factors for the first time."

It's not clear yet what exactly Futuremark Games will be doing at Rovio, or how much Rovio paid for the company, but all will no doubt be revealed soon.

This is the second acquisition Rovio has made in the last year, having bought Finnish animation studio Kombo in June 2011.
