Radiation Island will remain iOS-only as Android players 'don't pay for premium content'

The zombie survival game Radiation Island has been out on iOS for a few months now. That's about enough time for us to start wondering if an Android version might turn up.

So, to find out if an Android version is on the way, we reached out to developer Atypical Games. The answer we got wasn't quite the one we were expecting.

First off, Atypical said quite firmly that an Android version would not be happening at all. Sorry.

But the studio then went on to explain the reason for that. "We are strictly a premium developer (paid games) so Android is not our market," starts Atypical's CEO, Andrei Lopata.

"We recently did a test with Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders (WWII dogfight game, winner of 2013 Apple Design Award) and the results were disappointing, even if the game was in top 10 paid globally," Lopata said.

"For the moment, it's quite clear that Android users don't pay for premium content. Google is also not pushing premium content either."

Lopata did add that Atypical Games hasn't given up on Android entirely as it may try the platform out again with a different game.

But, for now, while the studio is making premium games that charge players upfront rather than monetise through IAPs, it's sticking to iOS only.
