Quake 3 ported to Android

Well, Kwaak3 anyway

We've seen Quake ports on Android before, but they didn't manage to survive all that long before id Software had the unofficial adaptations of its games removed from the Marketplace. Not an unreasonable action on id's part, but it was still sad to see these open source projects vanish.

Homebrew developer Thunderbird2K hasn't let this dampen his spirits, however, and has just released a port of Quake 3 (or Kwaak3, as he calls it) for his brand new Google-powered smartphone.

"When I received a Motorola Milestone phone, I wanted to get into Android development. I had seen ports of Quake3 to the iPhone and the N900 which have similar specifications…so I thought why not bring Quake3 to Android?" said the developer.

Why not indeed, and by all accounts his first effort is pretty damn slick as you can see from the video released by AndroidandMe below.

The Android port is designed to work on a keyboard-equipped device, so the developer thinks it's unlikely to run on the powerful Nexus One at this point. Once again Kwaak3 is an open source project, however, so hopefully the homebrew crew will have it running on all manner of Android handsets before long.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
