Thanks to the new update, you can now play Pokémon Go at 120Hz on iPhone
With the release of Pokémon Go latest update, iPhone users now have the option to play at the native refresh rate of 120Hz. It should make iPhone users extremely happy since this promises much smoother gameplay and a better experience overall. However, playing at such a high rate will likely drain the phone's battery life.
Pokémon Go doesn't require you to play explicitly on 120Hz, but since it is played with finger movements and a gyrometer, smoother gameplay is an advantage. And with the latest iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max's powerful processors and 120 Hz screens, you can now run Pokémon Go at 120 fps. That is a huge upgrade from the previously locked 30fps. You can enable this feature for older iPhones as well, but the performance will be worse with severe frame drops.
How To Enable Native Refresh Rate?
For many, the setting is auto-enabled if you have updated the game through the App Store. However, if the feature is turned off, you can enable it by following the steps below:- Tap the Poke ball on the main screen
- Tap Settings
- Scroll down and tap on Advanced Settings
- Finally, tap on the Native Refresh Rate option to see a "Native refresh rate unlocked" message and a green tick mark will turn up on the right-hand side.
Niantic Inc. has explained why the option is turned off in the older models. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max both have ProMotion which allows the framerate to vary between 10-120fps without stuttering. The ageing A11 process cannot perform like that. With the processor overclocked, the phone might cause heating issues and severe battery drain. So, it is best to keep the option disabled on older devices.

A few months ago, similar tactics were seen for Genshin Impact, when the developers released the option to play the game at 120fps. We will likely see more and more games enable this feature as more and more phones start to bring out capable hardware.
