Pokemon Go's Throwback Challenge is underway, starting with Kanto where the final reward is a Mewtwo encounter

The next four weeks will see a series of Throwback Challenges in Pokemon. The first begun today and will be available until Friday 8th May. This week is Kanto themed and will give players a plethora of challenges to complete.

The grand prize for beating all of these challenges will be an encounter with a Mewtwo that knows Psystrike and 10 Rare Candies. But before you get to that, there will be other objectives you'll have to complete first. They're all fairly simple tasks and each will offer its own reward.

It will consist of the usual catching Pokemon of certain types, transferring them, hatching eggs, battling in raids or taking snapshots. Nothing too taxing and an easy way to get some rewards including Poke Balls, Stardust, Charged Potions, Fast TMs and more.

As you might expect from the name, some of these rewards will also include encounters with Pokemon from the Kanto region. This will include the likes of Chansey, Lapras, Snorlax and Dratini among others with the final one, as mentioned, being Mewtwo.

Alongside these missions, you'll notice a few slight changes in the game too. Whilst the Kanto event is ongoing Venonat and Chansey will start appearing more regularly in the wild and there's a chance those Venonat will be shiny. More Kanto region Pokemon will also appear in raids.

Beyond that, ever the fan of hats, Pikachu wearing one that resembles Charizard can be found in the wild as a nod to the Flame Pokemon being voted as everyone's favourite Pokemon from the Kanto region. I mean, it should really be Gengar but who am I to argue with general consensus?

Elsewhere, there will be 2x bonuses for XP when catching, hatching or raiding and the following Pokemon can be hatched from 7km Eggs:

  • Venonat
  • Machop
  • Onix
  • Lickitung
  • Tangela
  • Scyther
  • Pinsir
  • Lapras
  • Eevee

Pokemon Go is available now over on the App Store and Google Play. It's a free-to-play game with in-app purchases.
