Update on March 3rd at 17:19:
We now have an explanation courtesy of Game Informer and it seems like the game was indeed not yet ready:

"We have decided to forego our GDC talk on Pokémon GO in order to focus on getting the product ready for beta test and launch," says Niantic CEO John Hanke. "As much as we hate to disappoint those in the industry attending GDC, we feel our time and energy right now are best spent on making sure every aspect of the product is where we want it to be."

Well that's a bit weird... Niantic was supposed to showcase the first gameplay for the hotly anticipated mobile title Pokemon GO at this year's GDC as we reported but the presentation as since been cancelled according to the official schedule.

So what's going on with Pokemon GO?

Well yesterday a trademark was filled for the AR catch-them-all game meaning that things appear to be moving forward but maybe it was a bit too soon and the game wasn't ready for primetime this month.

Don't expect any news on Pokemon GO at tonight's Nintendo Direct as Nintendo explicitly said that it wouldn't talk about mobile games.
