Far out. Literally.

PGC Helsinki 2016: Space Invaders meets Flappy Bird in Trippy Viking
|

Ever wondered what happens when a viking takes too many mushrooms? He throws up rainbows, of course.

No, I haven't been consuming too many myself. This inside information was provided by Firetail Games, a brand new Finnish developer whose first game is all about a viking taking too many mushrooms. In space.

Trippy Viking takes the control scheme of Flappy Bird and combines it with the gameplay of Space Invaders. You have to manically tap the left hand side of the screen to keep a viking afloat in space, while trying to chomp as many mushrooms as possible.

Meanwhile, you'll float past a bunch of enemies. Touch just one and it's game over. You can tap the right side of the screen to throw an axe at them though - as a viking should.

Along the way you can collect a bunch of temporary upgrades in the form of new weapons and shields. These include three flaming axes and a massive hammer that can take out multiple opponents at once.

Of course, you could just eat a bunch of mushrooms to grow in size and, eventually, throw up a screen-filling rainbow that obliterates all enemies in its path. Of course.

You can watch a brief ad just before starting the game to unlock a few upgrades from the get go. Bear in mind that these are temporary, though you can recharge them by collecting mushrooms of the Firetail logo.

Trippy Viking has already soft launched in Finland, but the rest of us will have to wait until later this month when it launches for free on iOS and Android.
