Plants vs Zombies 2 is germinating, will blossom this July

Say what you will about plants and the animated dead, neither are typically known for their alacrity.

Maybe this explains why PopCap's Plants vs Zombies 2 shuffled past its teased release window of "the first half of 2013".

When that time was upon us, the release window changed to "this summer" - but now we have confirmation from PvZ Community Marketing Manager Stephanie Bayer who announced that Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time will arrive in July.

We don't have a specific date in July, mind, but having a firm month is always a good sign.

Incidentally, It's About Time is a tantalizing tagline for the new tower defence title and may be a clue as to what players can expect from its gameplay.

It may not be much to go on, admittedly, but so far all we've heard is that PvZ 2 will feature a "bevy of new features, settings, and situations".

You'll know more when we do.

Being a big fan of Popcap I would have been excited about this news, but Popcap aren't popcap anymore, the magic is gone. everything that was once Popcap now feels like EA even the Popcap website, I stopped playing PVZ when they turned it into an IAP mess and now this game is going to be ruined by even more IAP, such a shame :(

I'm a huge fan of Popcap, and moreover their now iconic tower defence title, Plants vs Zombies. Okay, @Josh Dombro, we've all played it til our brains have boiled - and on multiple platforms to boot - but I remain loyal to this endearing brand. With this in mind, I am genuinely excited for for the long awaited sequel, and I can't wait to see what they've done with the franchise, and how they'll keep it relevant.

Going back to Popcap, what with the current trend of HD Collections (particularly on Playstation Vita, and long may it continue), I'd love to see Popcap do something similar and bring Peggle and Bejeweled (and maybe even Zuma) to Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Perhaps they could lump them with the current version of PvZ and market them along the lines of a 'Popcap Classics Collection'? I'd certainly throw fifteen or twenty quid at it, and I really can't think of a better way of ramping up the hype train ahead of PvZ 2 for handheld gamers. Can you?

"It's about time" is intriguing to me, but until I see what they're doing with it I'm not entirely sold. PvZ was a fun tower defense game, but I'm surprised that with so much criticism about repeating games and themes, people seem so excited about a sequel. Maybe people have a lot of faith in PopCap to do something different, it just seems very unlike the gaming community, which seems to default to negativity. Thanks for the heads up, Matthew, looking forward to future updates.
