OpenFeint update bringing Android vs iPhone cross-platform play

Let the games begin

It’s time to prepare for battle, as OpenFeint is set to allow both Android and iPhone users to compete against one another in online multiplayer games.

Aurora Feint has announced that the latest version of the social gaming network (2.6, if you're keeping count) will allow users to send SMS and e-mail game invites to anyone in their smartphone address book.

Additionally, plans for cross-platform play have been unveiled, allowing iPhone and Android users to compete on the same playing field for victory over supported applications.

Aurora Feint executive chairman Peter Relan noted: “One glaring problem with today’s mobile gaming community is how fractured it is across platforms. OpenFeint is bridging the gap between gamers...we’re going to roll out services that will help friends that use different device platforms play against each other.”

This move comes as part of OpenFeint's expansion into the Android market, although out-of-network invites will be made available to Apple users first.

It's not the first time we've seen Android to iPhone cross-platform play - Skies of Glory being the most notable example to date - but OpenFeint's support should open the way for far more examples.

Cross-platform play is expected to start creating ripples in the gaming community this summer. As the season is beginning to draw to a close, we’re hoping this means sooner rather than later.

This site or a similar one should start a running list of all mobile games that have cross-platform leaderboards and/or multiplayer.
