Nokia boss rejects Android, says Nseries Symbian^4 a very strong possibility
Plus MeeGo for computing
Despite being the smartphone leaders in terms of global install base, Nokia and Symbian have taken a beating in recent years.
The Finnish giant is claiming the fightback starts now: at least that's what Anssi Vanjoki, its new head of mobile solutions, is saying.
"I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices. Achieving this will require performance and efforts over and above the norm," he says on the Official Ovi blog.
"This is a role I've personally been preparing for over the last 20 years. We have all the assets — including R&D and product development – at our disposal under one roof – to produce killer smartphones and market-changing mobile computers."
Choice of twoIn terms of how the fightback will happen, he points to the Nokia N8, the company's first device to use the Symbian^3 OS.
Indeed, Symbian is highlighted as one of the main technology pillars of Nokia's future.
"Despite rumors to the contrary, there are no plans to introduce an Android device from Nokia," Vanjoki says.
"There has also been some confusion about Symbian and Nseries. The Nokia N8 will be our only Nseries device on Symbian^3. Of course, we 'never comment on future products', but a Symbian^4 Nseries device is a strong possibility. A very strong possibility."
And, together with joint venture partner Intel, Nokia will be using its MeeGo OS for what Vanjoki calls the computing space.
"The current phase of MeeGo development is looking awesome. We believe it will power the computers of the future. And the computers of the future will not be tied to a desk or even a lap - they will fit in your pocket," he explains.
