Updated on June 2nd, at 14:39: Nintendo has responded to these claims.

In a comment to the Wall Street Journal, a Nintendo spokesman said "There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX".

So, there we go.

Original story follows…

Android

Nintendo's next console - the codenamed Nintendo NX - could run an Android-powered operating system, in an attempt to make game development easier for third party developers.

That's according to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, relaying info from an insider source as part of a wider article about Nintendo's relationship with free to play publisher, DeNA.

Nintendo previously embraced Unity support (a popular engine that powers most major mobile games) on both New Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, in an effort to lure in more developers.

We still don't really know what the NX, but Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has described it as a "dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept" and says more info will be shared in 2016.
