10 best Android games this week - Gemini Rue, GTA: San Andreas, and more

Every Friday, Pocket Gamer offers hands-on impressions of the week's best new Android games.

And, so, we come to the final round-up of 2013.

And what a way to go: a cracking point-and-click adventure, a bonkers match-three puzzler, a new gamebook, and a barmy Ouya import.

Think we've missed a top new Android game? Shout at us with all your might in the comments section at the bottom.

If not, we'll see you next year.

This week's top pick

Gemini Rue
By Wadjet Eye Games - buy on Android (Pay what you want)

Gemini Rue

An atmospheric point-and-click adventure, in which your time is split between a film noir detective story and a dystopian prison drama.

All the puzzles are grounded in reality, and there are sometimes multiple ways to overcome an obstacle. And as flatfoot Azriel, you actually feel like a detective as you have to follow clues and track down leads.

Best of all, though, is the game's cracking sci-fi yarn. I said that "this bleak and thought-provoking story will be enjoyed by fans of Philip K. Dick and the like" when I played it on iOS. I then stated that "I was utterly rapt until the very end".

Also out this week...

Hero Siege
By Panic Art Studios - buy on Android (Free)

Hero Siege

A gloriously gory twin-stick slash-'em-up described by its maker as Diablo meets Binding of Isaac. You'll go on a rampage against rats and other beasties in a randomly generated fantasy world. It's also got crafting, loads of level-up perks, and plays nicely on touch. Check it out for free.

Fighting Fantasy: Island of the Lizard King
By Tin Man Games - buy on Android (£3.99 / $5.99)

Island Lizard king

Not a great place for a holiday or honeymoon, but the Island of the Lizard King is an interesting setting for a gamebook. This is a remake of an Ian Livingstone classic, and it's just as gripping as the rest of Tin Man Games's exhaustive back catalogue. Put on your reading glasses and settle down for an adventure.

Colossatron: Massive World Threat
By Halfbrick Studios - buy on Android (58p / 99c)

Colossatron

Halfbrick's latest is a smart match-three puzzler, played out on the back of a robotic space snake intent on destroying planet earth. The idea is to snap floating power cores into Colossatron's Zuma-style body. It's a clever idea. And like in most Halfbrick games, there's quite a bit of depth hidden here beneath the colourful, casual, and simple exterior.

The Lawless
By The Innocent Devils - buy on Android (Free)

The Lawless

A super-goofy but super-charming little game about shooting cowboys in the face. It's all about reflexes and quickly tapping on faces. It's also got great 3D artwork - I like the way the main character has to psyche himself up before all the face killing. Not amazing, but worth a look.

No Brakes Valet
By Blinkbat Games - buy on Android (£1.69 / $2.99)

No Brakes Valet

A wonderfully silly Ouya import in which you try to park cars that have had their brakes cut. Once your parking lot starts filling up - and especially when you play with a pal using same-device multiplayer - it becomes raucously funny to watch your pixel-art pile-up grow.

Mimpi
By Crescent Moon Games - buy on Android (£1.22 / $1.99)

Mimpi

A surreal fever dream platformer about a pooch named Mimpi. As you traipse through bizarre psychedelic backdrops, you're able to reach out and fiddle with platforms and props to solve puzzles. We liked the game, but said it was "unnecessarily frustrating" in our review.

Kami
By State of Play Games - buy on Android (69p / 99c)

Kami

We've seen games like this before. You tap the screen to fill a contiguous area in one colour. Then, you tap again to fill in a larger area. Then, you keep tapping until the screen is uniform in colour. As good fun as always, but the developer of meditative Kami makes it even better via a terrific paper aesthetic and charming origami animations.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
By Rockstar Games - buy on Android (£4.99 / $6.99)

San Andreas

This epic PS2 crime caper has now made its way over to Android. As ever, you'll be using guns and cars to finish missions - this time, across the state of San Andreas. It's a truly gigantic game with about 100 hours of content, and the controls work surprisingly well on a touchscreen.

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! (Force = Mass x Acceleration)
By Dejobaan Games - Android (Pay what you want)

AAAaaaaa

This PC spin-off is a lightning-paced first-person fall-'em-up about throwing yourself off neon-dipped buildings and then putting yourself in as much danger as humanly possible on the way down. Why? For high scores, of course. We called it "a fine example of style and substance" and "as addictive as it is garishly unique" on iOS.
