Cartoon Network will publish the forthcoming sweet and sickly retro-inspired iOS and Android adventure game Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake.

The game stars a young boy named Niko who goes on an epic sugar-high romp across Gogapoe Island after some nefarious monster types make off with his birthday cake.

As you seek confectionery-based vengeance, you'll have to solve a bunch of spatial reasoning puzzles using elemental powers, teleportation, trips to outer dimensions, and a cast of decidedly less nefarious monsters.

It is, of course, inspired by retro favourites like The Legend of Zelda and Little Nemo: The Dream Master, as well as nostalgic playground chatter about "secret levels, rumored play modes, and other game-related lore".

"We endeavor to recreate the nostalgia of our youth while continuing to experiment with new ideas," Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake developer SleepNinja says.

Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake rose to prominence on Kickstarter last year when it attracted some $26,000 of crowdfunded cash.

SleepNinja is quick to assure its 1,216 backers that the Adventure Time network won't stick its oar in.

In fact, SleepNinja says that "[Cartoon Network has] not tried to guide us in any new directions or convince us to change any aspect of the game."

Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake will "definitely be out this summer", and will also be heading to PC and Mac. Furthermore, it features music from Fez composer Disasterpeace.
