Monster Hunter Now: Purple Star Monsters explained
If you've been playing Monster Hunter Now, you will have noticed that as you continue through the Story quests, you will find yourself facing stronger monsters. The strength of a monster is shown by the stars above their icon or head when they appear on the map. These stars go from one to five, in a tan-brown colour. When you get to Chapter 1: Beyond the Dust Clouds, however, everything changes.
What does the Purple Star above a Monster in Monster Hunter Now mean?
At this point, you will find that monsters on your map are appearing with a single purple star above their head. This means that the monster itself is more powerful than a normal five star monster. Along with being stronger, you can also find specific items from that specific monster, that only drop on Purple Star monsters. These items have a higher rating, hitting Rarity 5. These items are needed at specific upgrade points, locking your weapon or armour until you have unlocked the Purple Star and then earned the item from that monster.

Otherwise, these monsters work the same as any other monster; you can Paintball them, you can fight them with friends (personally, I have to fight these with friends as otherwise I cannot beat them on my own) and you will still need to dodge their attacks, which are just more powerful than weaker stared monsters.
If you have been upgrading your weapons and armour constantly while you get to Beyond the Dust Clouds, you will likely have less of a challenging time fighting them off. If you have not unlocked Purple Star monsters in Monster Hunter Now, you can fight any that your friend has unlocked, by joining into their hunting party! This might give you a good idea of what to expect and a headstart at collecting rare items!
