Minecraft developer Mojang has hired Shogi Cervantes: the creator of an unofficial program that lets Minecraft: Pocket Edition users play online multiplayer.

PocketMine lets you turn your computer or Android device into a server. Then, with a little port forwarding magic on your router, players from around the world can join the same world and craft together.

A tweet from Pocket Edition dev Tomasso Chechi seems to show that Cervantes is developing official online server tech for Minecraft's iOS and Android edition.

Pocket Edition used to work with an alpha version of Realms - a Mojang-ran service for simple multiplayer Minecraft that costs £8 a month - but development for the mobile version was paused back in February 2014.

We don't know if this new server tech will be part of Realms, whether it will carry a fee, and when it will be live. (But seeing as Cervantes has only been there for a few weeks, don't expect it in 0.11).

As for PocketMine itself, Cervantes says "PocketMine's ownership is still in my hands. It's not affiliated with Mojang. I'll still be working on it!"

We'll have a full guide to using PocketMine later today.
