Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield seeking funds for free-to-play location-based iOS game Map Monsters
Subsequent Android port planned
Richard Garfield, the creator of card battling game Magic: The Gathering, and his new studio are seeking funds via Kickstarter for a free-to-play location-based iOS game called Map Monsters.
This adventure title sees you take on the role of a member of an elite monster containment unit, which is tasked with travelling into another dimension to capture monster-like creatures and reclaim the items that they've stolen.
According to its Kickstarter profile, Map Monsters will feature location-based gameplay "done right". Basically, you won't be required to travel around real-world locations, but will instead advance through the game more quickly if you choose to do so.
As you explore the game's world (either real or virtual), you can build mileposts, roads, gold mines, and farms. You can also trade with players who have items that aren't available in your immediate area.
If the team behind Map Monsters manages to amass the $40,000 it needs to complete this game, it'll be released on iPhone and iPad. A subsequent port to Android is planned.
