If you stacked each of the Android-powered consoles either on the market or heading to the market on top of one another, that pile would probably collapse after five seconds.

Especially if you put Mad Catz's newly announced Mojo at the bottom.

The San Diego-based peripheral manufacturer's new Android-powered gaming box will be available in stores before the end of the year, and is shaping up to be a real contender.

Speaking to CVG, Mad Catz global director of PR Alex Verrey made it very clear that his firm is "going down a very different road to the competition" when it comes to access to existing Android software.

"We are totally open. No walled garden, no small selection of games, no subscription fees. We bring the hardware, gamers bring the games. Buy games from where you want, when you want, and how you want."

Mad Catz's Mojo micro-console is a stock Android device, meaning it will have access to the Google Play Store out of the box. You'll also be able to play games from the Amazon Marketplace and from Nvidia's TegraZone on the Mojo.

In the Mojo box itself, you'll find the oddly angled console and a USB and HDMI connector. There'll also be a Mad Catz gamepad in there, which looks a lot like an Xbox 360 controller after a few too many pies.

The Mojo gamepad will boast support for both Bluetooth Classic (for connecting to other devices) and Bluetooth Smart 4.0 (for reduced input lag).

There are three modes on the gamepad: GameSmart, Mouse mode, and PC mode.

Mad Catz hasn't revealed too much about the console specs, mind, though we do know it'll have at least 16GB of internal storage, will support microSD cards, and will be able to "stream 1080p perfectly" (for apps like Netflix).

According to Verrey, the Mojo will "will be the most powerful Android-based micro-console on the market when we launch [it] later this year".

There aren't any pricing details available yet for the Mad Catz Mojo, but we'll keep you posted when we find out more.
