Lego Minifigures Online is an interesting, diluted MMO that actually works remarkably well on mobile. Or at least it does when it's not crashing or chugging.

It's fair to say that in its early days the game is having some teething problems. But I've played through the first world, which is all pirates, fiery dogs, and cannons, and found something genuinely entertaining under the occasional glitches and drops.

Building blocks

The game takes the form of a simple action RPG. You're wandering around Lego-built levels, whomping anything that moves back into bricks, and completing quests that move the story along.

At the same time you're often surrounded by other adventurers, who are doing pretty similar things. As you smash and bash through the quests, you unlock new figures with different skills. You can have three of these equipped at once, and swap between them on the fly.

You can adventure with your friends by adding them using their ID code.

Stars you collect can be spent on upgrading your crew, and making sure they're all on relatively the same page will ensure you're not too stuck when tougher enemies come along later in the game.

There's no real puzzle solving in the first chunk of the game. You're just following an arrow, mashing the attack button, and grabbing as many stars as you can.

You rebuild broken structures by pressing on them, and different characters can build quicker than others. Learning which of your figures to use in which situations is part of the fun.

If it sounds simple, it's because it is. But that's no bad thing. This is a game aimed squarely at a younger audience, and while it's not as deep as some more mature experiences, it's a lot more impressive than most games for youngsters.

Strong foundations

It's not perfect, and like I said at the start there are clearly some teething problems with the game at the moment, but hopefully they'll work themselves out in the coming weeks and months.

It'll be interesting to see where the game goes next, and whether the more creative side of the Lego universe pops up in later updates.

But right now there's enough here that you can just about look past the limitations and find a few hours of simple, brick-based violence.
