Google's new Nexus 5 smartphone goes on sale

Well, the rumours were true.

Yesterday, Google and LG finally took the wraps off the next-generation Nexus phone.

It's called the Nexus 5, it's pretty cheap, and it's got a lot of what we in the business call 'oomph'.

The Nexus 5 is the first Android device to run the new version of the Android OS, 4.4 KitKat. And, yes, it is sponsored by Nestlé. So, that's nice.

The first thing you'll notice - obviously - about Google's new flagship blower is its massive HD screen. It measures 4.95 inches, and has a 1920x1080 resolution. That translates to 445 pixels per inch. Which is silly.

The Nexus 5 is slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, and sports a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls and an 8-megapixel rear camera with image stabilisation.

Under the Nexus 5's hood, there's a super-powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 running at 2.26GHz and a dedicated Adrena 330 450MHz GPU. That's a lot of bang for your buck.

The Nexus 5 is blessed with a 2300mAh battery, which apparently is good for up to 300 hours on standby. We'll believe that when we see it. Which will be never. Wireless charging is built into the Nexus 5, too.

Furthermore, there's 2GB of RAM whizzing and whirring around in there. Oh, and you can pick from 16GB or 32GB 'flavours'. There's still no expandable storage option, though.

All the connections and ports you'd expect on an Android phone are present and correct in the Nexus 5, including 4G, NFC, and micro-USB. And you can choose from a black back or a white back.

Last but not least, the price. The 16GB version will set you back £299 / $349. The 32GB version will retail for £339 / $399.
