Blizzard previews the new 'jousting' mechanic in Hearthstone's upcoming expansion

Blizzard revealed a new "jousting" mechanic for its card-battler Hearthstone at Gamescom.

It will be used by the 11 new cards that were also revealed today but they won't be available until the new The Grand Tournament expansion is out later this month.

To demonstrate how "jousting" works, Blizzard used the Master Jouster, as you can see here. When played, both players have to reveal a minion from their deck.

If your minion card has a higher mana cost than your opponent's card then your Master Jouster will get a defensive boost.

According to Eurogamer, other cards that have the "jousting" ability gain attacking power or return Health points to your Hero instead of defence points.

Blizzard also revealed that there will be changes to Hearthstone's seasonal Ranked Play reward system.

It's good news: there will be additional tiered rewards for you to earn as you climb up the ladder each month.

If you reach Rank 17, for example, then you'll get a new Rare card, as well as bonus crafting dust and a new card back.

It's there to encourage more people to keep trying to climb the ranks before the reset.
