Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery just soft-launched on Android but we still don't know how to feel about it

Only a week after Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery released its first trailer, the game's sneakily popped up on Android in select territories and I'm pretty torn by it still.

When it was announced last year our excitement levels went through the roof, and understandably so. If you're not a Potter-head this probably seems a little over-dramatic, but for those of us that grew up with the books, films, and video games, Hogwarts Mystery is the next best thing.

As more information is released about the RPG however, the less excited I feel about it. Playing through seven years of Hogwarts as my own witch is a dream come true for me, but the trailer was a little underwhelming and, from the small segment of gameplay I've seen, it plays a lot like a point-and-click/narrative adventure with a few RPG elements.

This isn't a problem in my books, but considering it's free to play I'm more concerned about its use of energy bars and time-based activities. If done well, you should be able to get through the game without relying on IAPs to give you a boost. If done badly, there'll be a ton of roadblocks and timers that stop you from progressing until you either wait for the clock to hit '0:00' or until you put real money into it. In my experience that's when I stop playing altogether.

It's too early to start judging, and I seriously hope that Portkey Games has taken the right path, but for some of you the game's available now on Google Play. If you can access it, let us know how you're enjoying it in the comments below.
