Anyone paying (close, close, close) attention to Rockstar's blog over the past couple of days will have noticed something strange about its original
post announcing
Grand Theft Auto III is coming to iOS and Android.
Yes, that's right. The
Samsung Galaxy S II has been removed from Rockstar's list of officially supported devices for the
10th Anniversary Edition of
Grand Theft Auto III.
So, what gives, Rockstar?
Give me reasons, dammitA spokesman for the company has confirmed that
Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition will no longer feature support for the
hot-selling Samsung Galaxy S II, but didn't disclose why.
One reason could be the dual-core Exynos chip that powers the Samsung Galaxy S II, with Rockstar opting to focus on supporting Android devices that run on the more widely used Tegra 2 processor instead.
As for the game itself,
Grand Theft Auto III: Anniversary Edition will
launch on December 15th on select iOS and Android devices, and will retail for £2.99 / $4.99.

GTA3 works fine on a normal unmodded SGS2 -
-seems to be missing some lighting effects (headlights, street lights),
-pop up is very noticeable but i think the PS2 version was the same, suspect thats just the original code
-its crashed twice over 3 days of pretty heavy play but thats all i have in the way of complaints.
It is however very fluid and fast, decent enough touch controls, all the music and voice acting is there. Best thing is that the load times are extremely fast... level load time takes 2 or 3 seconds, and you can be playing from clicking the games android icon in about 15 seconds, which is a significant improvement on many games (Nova 2....) and ideal for a quick play on the bus.
For christs sake its one of the best games ever made and you can have it on your phone for the cost of a pint.

I, sgsII owner will too, not be supporting it even if it does work through chainfire3D
ROCKSTAR YOU JUST GOT YOURSELF POTENTIAL 10MILLION HATERS
Idiots. Some people actually buy Galaxy S II for its superior Exynos CPU which is miles better than tegra2...

Good job rockstar, now instead of me buying it for 4.99 like i would have if it had been made to support my GSII, I will now just pirate it and run it through chainfire 3d. No way I'm supporting this move by buying the app, if they patch it to run natively on gsII then perfect, I'll happily pay for it.

He did all that and then some. Ok, seriously though, I used Chainfire3D on my single core SGS to play Samurai II and Riptide GP before either were supported on anything but Tegra2, and each ran like butta.

I've used Chainfire 3D on my original Nexus One to play Tegra 2 optimized games...worked like a charm!

You know what's the best? IN the Android MArket, there's an app called "Chainfire 3D". It lets you emulate Tegra-optimized games on e.g. Galaxy S II, and as I heard, it works pretty well. See the irony?
