Google losing battle of the apps?

A report from analytics company Distimo has revealed that, while the Android Market’s library continues to expand, only a very small percentage of games are selling in big numbers.

Distimo’s figures have just five Android titles selling over 250,000 copies during the market’s lifetime, while ten iPhone games reach the same figure every two months.

Further figures reveal that almost 80 per cent of paid apps on the service are downloaded fewer than 100 times, with just one in 1,000 clearing the 50,000 barrier.

It may be that Android users are using their phones for more productive purposes: 96 releases in total have passed 5 million downloads, though this drops to two passing the 2 million mark for paid apps.

Distimo suggests that a mitigating factor may be the comparative speed at which Apple updates App Store rankings - not to mention the fact that iOS has been around over a year longer than its competitor.

Either way, the figures can’t make for particularly pleasant reading for Google.
