Android-powered GameStick fully funded as backers pledge $100,000 in 30 hours
|

A couple of days ago, UK-based studio PlayJam asked the Kickstarter community for $100,000 to fund a new Android-powered home console called GameStick.

Today, the company is celebrating.

You see, it took just 30 hours for more than 1,000 backers to pledge enough cash to meet PlayJam's funding goal.

"The response from the Kickstarter community has been truly overwhelming. We are confident in our product and what we hope it will mean for gaming but we were taken aback at how quickly the message was adopted," Anthony Johnson, PlayJam's CMO, said.

"There is no better feeling than having hundreds if not thousands of people endorse your idea."

The PlayJam team announced earlier today that GameStick will support both XBMC (a free open-source media player) and DNLA (which allows multi-branded digital products to interoperate) via a free optional software update later in the year.

"While we are shipping [GameStick] as a dedicated games console, we are keen to ensure that users have the ability to hack the device if they so wish and will be providing support for XBMC & DNLA via an optional firmware update in September," Johnson said.

"We encourage users to hack the device - the time for closed, proprietary systems is ending which bodes well for true innovation."
