Looking back on a month in mobile gaming

The best iOS and Android games of April 2018: Oddmar, Vandals, Ava Airborne and more
|

2018 has been a great year for mobile games so far, with March arguably the strongest month of the three so far.

April didn't quite match the standard set by its immediate predecessor, but it comfortably maintained the overall standard.

We had a beautiful platformer, an intriguing online shooter, a hyperactive endless flier and more.

Have you been playing anything else in April? Let us know in the comments below.

Oddmar
By Mobge - buy on iOS

Oddmar is one of those games that makes you sit up and take notice from the off, thanks to its gorgeous art style. But it's also a highly playable 2D platformer with oodles of charm.

The Pillars of the Earth
By Daedalic Entertainment - buy on iOS

This slow-burning narrative adventure is one of the best-looking games of its type, with a rich setting and gripping story. We can't wait for the rest of this tale to unfurl.

Vandals
By ARTE Experience - buy on iOS

Vandals is a game that sticks fairly closely to the GO formula for turn-based puzzlers, but it adds its own slick art style and a nifty street art spin.

Paladins Strike
By Hi-Rez Studios - download on iOS/download on Android

Paladins Strike takes the hero shooter and marries it with the MOBA, resulting in a decidedly mobile-friendly tactical online experience.

Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle
By Blue Wizard Digital - download on iOS/download on Android

Just like Slayaway Camp, Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle is a block-sliding puzzler with grisly horror movie premise. This time around, though, you're actually playing as Jason Voorhees, which is obviously super-cool.

Sdorica - Sunset
By Rayark - download on iOS/download on Android

Sdorica - Sunset is an intriguing mix of ideas, mashing together a bunch of free to play RPG stuff with match-three puzzling. It looks beautiful, too.

Mooseman
By Vladimir Beletsky - download on iOS/download on Android

What on Earth is Mooseman? It's a 2D walking simulator, kind of. The rest of it is all mood and myth, with a mysterious story that takes from Russian folklore.

Touchgrind BMX 2
By Illusion Labs - download on iOS

A fine extreme sports game that has you flipping your BMX bike around using two fingers. Chaining tricks and pushing the limits of each track remains a compelling experience.

Ava Airborne
By Laser Dog - download on iOS

Ava Airborne is an endless flier that throws so much stuff at you from the off, it can be rather overwhelming. It's never less than lovely to look at and play, though.

Major Mayhem 2
By Rocket Jump Games - download on iOS/download on Android

Major Mayhem 2 is a brash cover shooter, and an homage to the cheesy action movies of the '80s. Not everyone will be a fan of the freemium structure, but it's undoubtedly big dumb fun.

Jon Mundy
Jon Mundy
Jon is a consummate expert in adventure, action, and sports games. Which is just as well, as in real life he's timid, lazy, and unfit. It's amazing how these things even themselves out.
