Looking back on a month in mobile gaming

The best iOS and Android games of February 2018: Alto's Odyssey, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition and more
|

After January provided a stellar start to the year for mobile gaming, February was almost as impressive.

We had the brilliant sequel to a beloved stunt-runner, a complete reimagining of a giant console JRPG, and a cross-platform Metroidvania that arguably played best on mobile.

That's just to name three of the delights we've experienced over the past 28 days. February might have been short, but it certainly wasn't short on quality.

Have you been playing anything else in February? Let us know in the comments below.

Alto's Odyssey
By Snowman - buy on iOS

Calling Alto's Odyssey just another endless runner is a bit like calling The Wire just another cop show. This is mesmerically pretty, gloriously tactile stuff.

Death Squared
By SMG Studio - buy on iOS

This highly polished puzzler has you moving two coloured cubes around beautiful-but-deadly 3D environments. It's mighty clever, and the same-handset multiplayer potential alone is off the charts.

Dandara
By Long Hat House - buy on iOS/buy on Android

Its price might be premium and it might have launched on other platforms at the same time, but Dandara is perfectly at home on mobile. It's a superbly designed Metroidvania for the touchscreen generation.

Hero Hunters
By Hothead Games - download on iOS/download on Android

It's hard to get shooters right on mobile, but Hero Hunters manages with a chaotic brand of cover-based action. There's online PvP too, which is a tasty bonus.

Infinite West
By Ghanshaam Sewnath - download on iOS

Take a little of Square Enix's GO games, mix in some roguelike magic, spread it on a thick slice of chess and sprinkle with Wild West seasoning. That's the delicious recipe for Infinite West.

Dig Dog
By Rusty Moyher - buy on iOS

Like Downwell? Then Dig Dog could be your next minimalist roguelike action-platformer. It's all about digging down to find bones in randomly generated, brutally hard levels.

Florence
By Annapurna Interactive - buy on iOS

Less of a game, more of an experience, Florence is a brief but beautiful interactive story all about love, loss, and finding yourself. Give it a try.

SiNKR
By Wahler Digital LLC - buy on iOS/buy on Android

If you dig Rainbow Train's abstract puzzlers, particularly HOOK, you're likely to get on with SiNKR. It's all about hooking pucks using a sequence of strange fishing rod contraptions, and it requires a fair amount of thought.

Pako 2
By Tree Men Games - buy on iOS

Like a mobile-focused Crazi Taxi with added violence, Pako 2 deals in high-speed automotive carnage as you hare around a city taking pot shots at cops. Great fun.

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition
By Square Enix - download on iOS/download on Android

Square Enix has taken the full console Final Fantasy XV experience, completely redrawn the graphics and streamlined the gameplay for a mobile audience. The results are strange but really quite special.

Jon Mundy
Jon Mundy
Jon is a consummate expert in adventure, action, and sports games. Which is just as well, as in real life he's timid, lazy, and unfit. It's amazing how these things even themselves out.
