At a press conference last night in Germany, Samsung formally unveiled the Galaxy S III mini.

Pitched as a petite version of Samsung's hugely popular Galaxy S III, this mini edition is viewed by the Korean smartphone manufacturer as a direct response to European demand for smaller handsets.

As you can imagine, everyone at Pocket Gamer Towers was waiting with bated breath during the announcement for a glimpse at that all-important Galaxy S III mini spec sheet.

Now the hardware details have finally been released, it's safe to say the Galaxy S III mini is a major step-down from Samsung's flagship Galaxy handset.

Underpowered?

The Galaxy S III's powerful 1.4GHz quad-core processor has been replaced by a 1GHz dual-core CPU in the mini, for starters. The former's 4.8-inch 720p screen has also given way to a 4-inch 800x480 display.

Even the Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel camera is gone, with a 5-megapixel one taking its place in the mini.

You'll be able to choose between an 8GB or 16GB Galaxy S III mini model, with the option to boost that storage space via microSD. Furthermore, Sammy's new 'baby' blower runs Jelly Bean out of the box.

At what cost?

There is one crucial figure which has yet to be revealed, however: the price.

Given the Galaxy S III mini's distinctly average hardware, we assume that Samsung will be pushing the device as a mid-range alternative to the multi-million-selling Galaxy S III - with a mid-range price tag to match.

We'll bring you the release dates and price points for the Galaxy S III mini as soon as we know more.
