Sony buys cloud gaming service Gaikai

God of War on Facebook/mobile on the cards, then?

Sony buys cloud gaming service Gaikai
|

Despite strenuously denying such a deal prior to E3, Sony has confirmed today that it has purchased the streaming games service Gaikai for a cool $380 million.

If you've not heard of Gaikai before, the best way to describe it is as a direct competitor to OnLive, in that it allows gamers to play games streamed from a remote server.

Unlike OnLive, which requires access through dedicated software, Gaikai has used its tech to mainly focus on streaming 'hardcore' games through non-dedicated services such as Facebook.

The move is likely to see the firm's streaming tech employed in future Sony devices, either console or - just as likely - mobile and browser, with the official statement from SCE mentioning merely "internet-connected devices" as future beneficiaries.
