It's that time again! Time for another entry into our long-running GAMES OF THE WEEK series.

If you're looking for the best 5 games which have hit the iPhone, iPad or Android stores this week then you've landed yourself at the exact right place at just the right time. Lucky, lucky you.

With this article, we skirt around the droves of subscription services (Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass, GameClub, Hatch, and all of their friends) which have launched onto mobile platforms over the years. We also don't factor in things like Steam Link or Google Stadia which allow streaming to handheld devices - and would open up this list to almost every game under the sun.

What that means is that our list is a finely curated list of brilliant, fresh titles which you can download and play without subscribing to, or installing, any third-party initiative. Of course, there are some great games on those services, but, let's focus on the stuff that you can grab right now.

It's been a great week for mobile games this week, so much so that I really struggled to cut down the final 10 selections to five. What you're looking at here is the real stand-outs of a fantastic week (of a fantastic month) for mobile gaming. We've got everything from puzzlers to sci-fi strategy, and we stop off at plenty of other places along the way too.

Oh, and remember, that if you're looking to check through some of our previous selections then you can always do that at our Games of The Week Hub, it's a great way to find games to fill out that empty storage space on your phone. Or, if you like your news in bitesize chunks, delivered straight to your palm then maybe follow us on our Twitter.

Anyway, without any further delay, click on the big, blue button below to find out more about our top five of the games which released on mobile over the last week.

1
Rising Sushi

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Arcade

Rising Sushi

Rising Sushi is an arcade game all about stacking up sushi as high as you can, completing orders and, well, stacking up sushi as high as you can. It's sleek, simple and stylish, with controls being as simple as standard crane controls, but the dropping elevator and gradual wobbling of your sushi stack being the main opponents to perfect order.

I can't overstate how lovely the game looks, from the bouncing sushi to the little puffs of smoke, through to the red-hot sun in the background, Rising Sushi oozes style.

Rising Sushi is available on both Google Play and the AppStore, it's a cheap premium game.

Crying Suns

Publisher: Humble Bundle
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Strategy
Find out more about Crying Suns
Crying Suns

From a red-hot sun to Crying Suns. It's a sci-fi strategy roguelike which channels FTL with its star-maps and event systems but adds a deep, layered story and cool flight-squadron combat layer. I've played quite a lot of this, due to its previous release on PC, but was overjoyed with a chance to dip into it again on mobile, where the UI and controls work really makes it shine.

I'd even go as far as to say that playing Crying Suns on a tablet is actually the superior experience.

Crying Suns is available now for both Google Play and the AppStore. It's a premium game, although it is a complete bargain at less than £10.

Journey of Abyss

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Card battler

Journey of Abyss

As you might have gathered in my recent Slay The Spire review, Card-Roguelikes are definitely one of my preferred genres. Great for me then, that Journey of Abyss fuses that with a pretty cool narrative, giving it the feel of an adventure book alongside its card combat system. I know that this fusion isn't for everybody, however it's hard to deny the allure of the quality artwork and extra effort that has clearly gone into presentation - it's something rarely seen in games of this type.

Journey of Abyss is available now on the App Store and Google Play. It's a premium title that costs $0.99.

Hellrider 3

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action, Racing
Find out more about Hellrider 3
Hellrider 3

Hellrider 3 is finally out. We first spotted the long-awaited sequel a little over a year ago, when we wrote about the joys of the tight racing, the cool stunts and the clever weapons system. If anything Hellrider 3 has only got stronger in the year that's past, and it's well worth checking out if you want a fun riding (and skeleton shooting) experience.

Hellrider 3 is free to download on GooglePlay and the AppStore.

The Almost Gone

Publisher: Happy Volcano
Available on: iOS + Android + Switch
Genre: Adventure
Find out more about The Almost Gone
The Almost Gone

The Almost Gone, from Happy Volcano, first snuck onto our radar back in July of 2017 when it picked up second place in our Brighton Big Indie Pitch. We were compelled by the memorable narrative-exploration game, not least with its clever room/memory traversal methods and environmental puzzling. As an interesting twist, the event was actually only for PC/Mac titles, so it's a complete delight that it's now available on mobile platforms.

The Almost Gone is available now as a premium title, you can grab it on the AppStore and on Google Play.
