EA's super-powerful Frostbite engine heading to smartphones and tablets in the form of Frostbite Go
Did it just get colder in here?
It's not very often we get excited about game engines here at Pocket Gamer's subterranean HQ, but the announcement that EA is working on a mobile version of its Frostbite engine is enough to send a shiver of excitement down our spines.
This news doesn't come as a complete surprise, to be honest, for EA DICE (the developer of Frostbite) did post a job listing for a mobile software developer only last autumn.
Spotted by NeoGAF on the Frostbite website, the new mobile engine will be called Frostbite Go; will run on Android and iOS devices; and will deliver "true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms".
Scalability is the key here, with Frostbite Go designed to offer the same tools to mobile developers as the console versions of the engine do for Xbox 360 and PS3 game makers. This should make it easier for game creators to transfer assets and ideas from home console titles over to smartphone and tablet games.
Frostbite currently powers the Battlefield and Need For Speed franchises on console and PC. The latest version of the Frostbite engine, Frostbite 3, will be used for the first time in upcoming gruff soldier shooter Battlefield 4.
