Finally you can explore the world of Fortnite without being under threat in the Playground mode. You can jump in with your friends and just explore, experiment with the physics and building mechanics of the game, and improve your skills for the real fight.

If you've not jumped in yet then you definitely should, and we've got the lowdown on what you can expect and how to make the most of your time in Playground mode.

Make sure to check out our Fortnite Ultimate Guide for more tips, guides, reviews and articles on the biggest battle royale on the planet. There, I said it. Suck it PUBG.

1
Way more materials

The first thing you'll notice about Fortnite's Playground mode is that you'll be swamped with materials. Start breaking down the environment and you'll quickly be able to gather 999 of each material.

This allows you to, well, build. Build and build and build. Start thinking of this as less a Fortnite game mode, and more a creative Minecraft mode. Here you have the flexibility to explore the world at your leisure, and flex your creativity.

This can help you devise strategies, master your gameplay tactics, and explore areas you might not have had the chance to go to otherwise.

2
Time to build

Building is a criminally undervalued aspect of Fortnite, as any professional players will tell you. Just randomly throwing out staircases is enough to confound enemies, and proper building technique will allow you to sneak up on fools and create cover.

In Playground mode you can try out the more complicated edit tool, which allows you to create a greater variety of objects.

Hold A on the object you've built, and then use ZR to edit the squares on the object, greying some out. You can use this to make shapes, like a doorway, or a window.

You have an hour until the storm starts closing in, which is a long time, but it's certainly not unlimited!

Respawn

If you fall from a high place or a friend you've invited into Playground mode decides to gun you down, you'll actually respawn. Shocking, I know!

You'll drop from the sky again and will be able to glide down to earth, giving you a chance to get the drop on your pals, or just get a great view of whatever you're building.

With this you don't have to fear building too high or being too hasty with your weapons.

Build for battle

Of course you can also consider Playground mode to be a training mode, of sorts. Forcing you to put your building and combat skills to the test.

Forts are, well, a pretty important part of Fortnite, and as such you can use this time to practice building big, durable forts that you can protect just as well as they can hold together.

Remember, you can get complicated with the building using the edit tools, making shooting windows inside the fort, and staircases so you can easily navigate it.

Get creative

Just like Minecraft, another fun aspect is, well, just getting creative and building something cool.

We've already seen some wonderful examples online, such as a penis, but we wanted to try our hand at it too. Here's the PG logo!

We also tried to cover up Dusty Divot, but the storm closed in. As it turns out, it takes a lot of time to gather materials and put them in place.
