Updated on Thursday, 18th June at 11:21 AM: Thanks to great shout outs from mbjones and Naail Zahid, the feature has been updated with three top franchises that deserve to be on this list.

It's official: Final Fantasy VII is headed to iOS. Which means we'll all die happily from exhaustion with mobiles clasped in our stiff fingers.

But don't die just yet - there are a ton of equally brilliant JRPG franchises that are yet to make the leap on mobile.

It's surprising, given the enormous success the genre has seen on iOS and Android so far.

Still, better late than never, eh? That's what we're hoping we'll say when these franchises make it onto mobile.

Mother

It's not fair that Nintendo gets to have all the Mother-related fun. Wait, that didn't sound right.

Just bring Ness and co. to iOS and Android, please.

Ni No Kuni

Ni No Kuni is practically a Studio Ghibli JRPG - the film studio helped make it and everything.

What - you still need convincing?

Xenogears

There are a lot of Xeno games with different titles and it's all very confusing.

They're good. That's all you need to know. Now, go play them.

Final Fantasy (the rest of them)

Wouldn't it be great to play every single Final Fantasy from first to last right on your mobile?

Just don't do it in one sitting - food, sleep, and toilet breaks are essential.

Kingdom Hearts

The franchise is getting a mobile version but it's not Kingdom Hearts as we know it.

As nice as a new one is, we'd still love to play the originals again. Please.

Tales of...

Tales of Symphonia would surely top the list but an opportunity to replay all of them without having to spend a ton on retro equipment would be awesome.

Skies of Arcadia

Skies of Arcadia is already criminally underplayed, having been released on only two of the most failed systems of all time.

Sega, you need to fix that.

Suikoden

Suikoden has its gaming roots planted in the PlayStation era and is loosely based on a classic novel.

Four sequels and multiple spin-offs have followed since and each have followed a similar political theme to the previous entries in the franchise.

Star Ocean

The Star Ocean franchise offers a unique combination of sci-fi and fantasy and was one of the first JRPG series to offer real-time combat and to allow you to alter the plot and relationships with other characters based on your decisions and actions.

Breath of Fire

Where Breath of Fire differs is in its use of the same two protagonists in each game of the series.

Good news for fans of the franchise: the latest instalment, Breath of Fire 6, is on its way to iOS and Android. Let's hope that the others follow suit.
