Gamescom '13: EA reveals that FIFA 14 will be free-to-play on mobiles

During EA's Gamescom keynote, executive vice president of EA Sports Andrew Wilson revealed that FIFA 14 will be a free-to-play experience on mobile devices.

This news doesn't exactly come as a massive shock given the recent transformation of the Plants vs Zombies, Tetris, and Real Racing franchises into F2P experiences.

Still, it'll be interesting to see quite how EA plans to monetise its premier football series on iOS and Android. Wait timers between matches? Unlockable galácticos? IAPs for new stadia?

Let's just hope the Madden maker doesn't look towards Real Football 2013 on this score.

Do you remember the 27th night of September?

Wilson also took the chance to eulogise over FIFA 14's all-new touch controls. We went hands-on with FIFA 14 and had a look at the new controls ourselves earlier in the year.

EA still hasn't issued a concrete release date for FIFA 14 on iOS and Android, by the way. We'll assume it'll drop around the same time as its home console counterparts, though.

So, September 27th, footy fans. Only a month to go...

At least they gave us good games like Dead Space, Mass Effect Infiltrator, and Mirror's Edge before going full fledged on this crappy free to play model. I shudder to think how those games would have turned out in their terrible free-to-play rampaging mindset

Oh well I'm done with Fifa on iOS and generally anything from EA. They're sucking the fun out of games. I don't have an issue with IAP when it's for something like new/extra levels etc, I'm fine with this whatever platform I'm pl.aying games on, be it a season pass for Bioshock Infinite on my PC or extra levels for Where's My Water on my iPhone. It's cool, I get that, it's extra content for people who love the game.

But with the kind of consumable IAP being pushed by EA and Gameloft, it's very hard to know how much it will cost to complete a game, say if you "complete" a game and then a few months down the line you wanna start again..then you gotta pay again for extra energy etc.

@curtisrshideler, I really wish there were alternatives but there aren't many, Konami seem to have given up on iOS as we never got a Pro Evo game last year and there's no news of a new game from them this year, Gameloft went freemium but then their Real Soccer games have stunk since day one so it's no big loss, the guys behind X2 Soccer went freemium, there really aren't any premium soccer games on mobile anymore.

The last game I paid for on my iPhone was that Layton Brothers game nearly 2 months ago, forget paid titles I haven't even downloaded any "free" games since, a couple of years ago I was buying like a game a week on iOS. Says it all really.

Oh wait, Mueller has ran 1km today. Buy an action energy recharge or he will play at half stamina.

Each substitution costs 4 action energy. Unlimited substitutions.

Pay $3 for a commentary pack.

Change kit color etc costs in-game cash.

GOD AWFUL. *spits to the freaking ground in disgust*

Wow. Glad I haven't deleted FIFA 13 from my devices in anticipation. I can see this going horribly wrong. I want a full-featured footy game, and I want the ability to pay upfront for the whole dang thing.

I sure hope there aren't timers, IAP per club, etc. Otherwise, I'll be jumping ship and trying another footy game. Or just sticking with Football Manager 13/14.

I'm tiring of EA. Haven't given them money since the last FIFA. And now it looks like I won't be giving them any money again if they keep this crap up.
