DungeonThing is a minimalist hybrid of dungeon crawler and Minesweeper

DungeonThing blends the loot and danger of dungeon crawling with the grid exploration of Minesweeper, presented in a minimal pixel style.

As a pixel square hero, you embark on dangerous descents into subterranean dungeons filled with enemies and traps. Tapping or swiping lets you move left, right, up, down, and diagonally, but be careful. Stepping next to an enemy will damage you, while landing on an enemy from an angle will kill it.

Two compasses - one for sensing nearby enemies, the other for finding the exit - help you figure out a safe path through each level.

Lava pits, spikes, and other dangers await, but you can gather power-ups to counter those hazards. The Orb of Foresight increases your visual range by an extra tile, the Longspear lets you attack enemies from a greater distance, among others.

There's also a puzzle element to DungeonThing's gameplay. You may have to maneuver around shield-wielding foes who can knock you back a tile - not ideal if you're near traps or lava - or find switches to disable spikes and flame vents. Stamina must also be considered; food diminishes with each step, while killing enemies grants you more food.

In addition to all that, you must collect gold throughout your quest to unlock new adventures. And if those adventures aren't enough, you can make and share your own using a level editor.

DungeonThing is still in development, and will be available on Android and PC. You can follow its progress, as well as find early builds to play, on the game's TIGSource devlog.
