Dungeon, Inc. review - An idle-clicker with sinister depths

| Dungeon, Inc.

The idle game genre is now so saturated and so tightly-designed that to stand out in it requires a unique setting, an interesting interface, and unique element to your gameplay.

Luckily, Dungeon, Inc. has all these coming out of its ears, with a beautiful cartoon art style, a clever set-up, and a unique twist on the formula with PvP battles.

It's not going to appeal to everyone – it is a fairly straightforward clicker at its core – but for fans of the genre there is a lot to get excited about here.

Off the books

Dungeon, Inc. opens with you committing insurance fraud by setting fire to your own dungeon, before re-opening for business with a fresh set of staff and a business to rebuild. Money generates automatically over time, and it's up to you to upgrade your rooms, build new ones, recruit monsters to guard against the taxmen, and eventually burn it all down again and start over. Dungeon, Inc.

At its core, it's business as usual – all you need to do is make sure you upgrade rooms to keep your money rolling in faster and higher, and keep going until you plateau and need to upgrade your overall stats by starting over.

But there's just as much attention to its look and feel as there is its mechanics, and it is certainly one of the most beautiful clicker games out there.

Tax season

Burning your dungeon down grants you in-game dollars from the insurance company, allowing you to buy and upgrade relics which boost your underlying stats significantly.

And you'll also need to spend some time opening chests, which grant you new monsters to hire and duplicate cards to upgrade them with, along with a small cash boost to nudge you along.

Monsters don't help your rooms productivity, however. From time to time you'll be attacked by tax auditors, and you'll need your creatures to kill them before they shut down your operation.

You can mount your own defence against the tax man by tapping away on the screen, with room upgrades also contributing to how much damage you can dish out through your fingers.

And if you want to, you can take your monsters into online battles against other players' dungeons, leading an assault to steal their treasure and gain PvP keys to unlock new bonuses that are otherwise unattainable.

It's this slight RPG twist on the idle-clicker formula that makes the game so enjoyable, adding another layer to an already enjoyable genre to make it that bit more compelling to actually play.

Quittin' time

Overall, Dungeon, Inc. isn't going to be for everyone – if you're looking for deeply-engaging gameplay and systems galore, you're better off elsewhere.

But if you're more into short bursts of simple gameplay while accruing huge sums of gold, there's plenty here to keep you entertained and wanting to come back.

It's bursting with fresh ideas, beautiful art, and enormous numbers that will satisfy just about anyone loves the idle genre.
