I adore small action-RPGs such as Drancia. It's cute, compact, and ideal for playing a few minutes at a time.

It starts by having you select a class, each of which have different stats, but begin at about the same default.

It's the usual roster: swordsman, witch, paladin, dwarf. But I should point out that one of the classes is a bear with a dead fish as a weapon. I've no idea why.

Anyway, once you've done that, the meat of Drancia starts. Your character has to defeat all of the enemies that pile up on the screen before defeating that level's boss.

You do this by simply charging into them with your weapon. Your character auto-runs in an attack posture, so all you have to do is hit left and right to change direction, and jump to reach flying enemies.

If an enemy makes contact with you anywhere than the front then you take damage. That's all there is to it. Oh, except that you can use magic for more devastating attacks.

It's simple, but over time there are enemies added to the mix that test your reactions. Some of them dash across the screen, others shoot acid on the floor, while another type fires projectiles at you.

Drancia

Every enemy drops coins when defeated. Collecting these gradually restores your health. But they can also be spent on upgrading your health, damage, and defence.

And with all those components in place, Drancia delivers an intense, bite-sized action-RPG that proves to be very easy to play. I think I'll be revisiting this one for a while.

You can download Drancia for free on the App Store [download] and Google Play [download].

It's supported by adverts, but there is a Bar where you can buy optional extras such as characters, music, and stages.
