Don't Grind is the latest game from Laser Dog, which you might know as the developer of Hopiko, Alone, PUK and Pktball. That's some library.

Understandably, then, Don't Grind is doing rather well on the US and UK App Store.

It's a peculiar beast, though, in which you find yourself tapping the screen to keep a food item - or 'grindable' - suspended in the air above a pair of circular saws.

There's no tutorial, as such - rather, you learn as you go, with a number of tips placed in between rounds.

If you're struggling to make any headway with it, allow us to lay on some tips to get you started.

Tapping and swiping tips

You don't need to worry about tapping directly on your grindable. You don't have to worry about where you're tapping in relation to your grindable. All that matters is the length of your tap - a short prod for a small hop into the air, a sustained hold for a longer leap.

As such, it's a good idea to keep your finger as out-of-the-way as possible. Down low in the corner, over the permanent saws, is a good place.

Your grindable's direction is dictated by swipes alone. Swiping left and right won't simply move you in those directions though - it'll act as an arcing hop in that direction.

Points are everything

Simply keeping your grindable alive isn't enough in Don't Grind. You need to accrue points, which come in the shape of those little stars that appear. Steer your grindable towards them, but be quick - they disappear in no time.

Watch out for warnings

The real threat in Don't Grind doesn't actually come from those two circular saws. They're a constant that needs to be taken into consideration, but they're easy enough to avoid.

No, the real hazards are the additional saws, lasers, and other deadly devices that appear from the sides and top of the screen. Fortunately, you'll get ample warning when a new threat manifests itself.

Once you're comfortable with the weight and momentum of your grindable, you'll be able to keep it airborne without looking and focus your attention on the warning indicators.

The position of the indicators indicates where they're going to come from. The arrow points in which direction they're going to be moving.

Don't be afraid to get close

Though rounds tend to be brief and brutal in Don't Grind, those saws are actually fairly forgiving. Your grindable will survive a brush with them, so don't be afraid to swoop low in order to grab a star. You'll lose a few chunks, but will live to tell the tale.
