Anti-shmup Dark Stars will force you to get up close to your enemies without a weapon
Soul taker
Solo developer Alex Hiatt tells us that he should have his "anti-shmup" Dark Stars out for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and PC in August.
It plays like many other space shmups with the big difference being that you don't shoot at all.
Fitting in with the game's dark religious and transhumanist themes, instead of shooting to damage enemy ships, you have to absorb their souls.
This means you have to get up close to your enemies while dodging their bullets in order to clear the screen. Once enough souls have been absorbed the enemy ship will be incapacitated.
In turn, these souls will charge your shields and abilities. The main instrument you have is called The Maw. It's a circular trap that you open up that Hiatt says has "has both offensive and defense properties."
You can watch the trailer for Dark Stars above to get a better idea of how this all works inside the game.
