App Army Assemble: Cliff Hopper - does it bring anything new to the auto-running table?
|
| Cliff Hopper

Cliff Hopper is an Indiana Jones-like auto-runner where you have to tap to turn corners, tap again to jump over rather perilous obstacles, and collect coins as you go.

If you're not a fan of burning to death, being crushed, plummeting like Wile E. Coyote, or getting cut up into tiny pieces, you'd best hone your reaction skills and keep those twitchy fingers/thumbs at bay.

The game looks great, it probably smells great too, but what did our App Army think of it? It's a bit of a short one, but let's find out.

Lee Walker-Blythe

I tried this as I like Indiana Jones, and auto-runners aren't bad either. I've been playing Robot Unicorn 3 just to hear the song by Erasure, but this game doesn't have that song, neither does it have an Indiana Jones song which I would happily pay for. The gameplay is tough, though its controls are simple - tap to turn and jump, and double tap to double jump. You collect coins for generic characters I feel I don't need. It's just the same old same old.

This game is good and bad. It looks cute with simple visuals and plays nicely, but does not add anything really great to the genre. Its sound is good enough to pass, but won't win any awards. There's not much to say about this game as it's playable, but not a game that will last after you've played an hour or so. There are better games out there.

There's not a lot to say about this game. It's an endless runner. The graphics are good and the mechanics are simple. You collect coins to upgrade your character and the music is repetitive. It's nothing that hasn't been done before, and after half an hour I'd had enough.

To be fair, it isn't the worst endless runner I've ever seen but there's nothing new either. It's a game to be played in short spurts.

Tony Teulan

Another week, another endless runner, but being an Indiana Jones fan, this is a theme I can get behind. That is what would make other fans keep this over the others. You can also unlock such copyright-defying characters as Iron Man or ones from slashers or classic monster movies.

There's nothing much to really say about this one and it doesn't add anything new to the genre. Those who like this type of thing may dig it, but those who don't probably won't be converted. It's still better than the fourth Indy movie, but raiders won't be after this game as it doesn't have a character ark. #DadJoke *mic drop*

*I figured since we had fewer voices this time, I might lend my own too as an App Army member.*

There are definitely good and bad points about the game. I like the fact that its controls are responsive - there's no delay whatsoever which is a necessity in auto-runners that need fast reactions.

It has a nice art-style with clear inspiration, and stands up to other auto-runners on the market, but sadly it doesn't exceed them. Cliff Hopper isn't a game I'd be looking to play a lot of in one sitting, but rather something I'd have on my phone just in case I needed a minute or two to kill.
