The 25 best multiplayer games on Android

25 essential games to start your Android collection
Product: Best Android games | Publisher: Steel Media Ltd | Format: Android
Updated January 9, 2018: New entries added

Playing multiplayer games on your mobile isn't the restrictive, awkward affair it used to be.

Vastly improved network infrastructure, faster hardware, and bigger screens mean that playing games against other people is a much better experience than it used to be - whether locally or online.

More importantly, game developers have simply got better at making these social experiences.

Mobile multiplayer games cover all the bases in terms of genres, too. Here are some of our favourites.

#1 Guns of Boom

Product: Guns of BoomFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Game Insight

Guns of Boom
If you want to play an online FPS on mobile, there's one stand-out champion right now. Guns of Boom has the most streamlined controls, the tightest maps and the most satisfying gunplay - and it runs well on a whole range of Android hardware.

#2 Hearthstone

Product: HearthstoneFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Blizzard EntertainmentPublisher: Blizzard EntertainmentGenres: Card battler, RPG, Strategy

Hearthstone is pretty much the undisputed CCG champ on any platform. But beyond that it's just a superb multiplayer game, inviting you to engage in a constant stream of tactical turn-based battles against real life opponents.

#3 Clash Royale

Product: Clash RoyaleFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Supercell

Clash Royale
Clash Royale effectively reset the rules for online mobile games, offering deeply strategic real-time competitive matches that could be blasted through in minutes. It's a little bit MOBA, a little but CCG, but all brilliant.

#4 ReRunners

Product: ReRunnersFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Klang GamesGenres: Multiplayer, Platform, Racing

Mario might have elbowed into the mobile platformer sphere of late, but ReRunners is arguably the more interesting example of the format. That's because it features an unusual massively multiplayer race mechanic at its core, ensuring each bout is a riot of tense competitive action.

#5 Vainglory

Product: VaingloryFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Super Evil MegacorpGenres: Action, Multiplayer, MOBA

The biggest mobile MOBA of them all, Vainglory is a much trickier beast to play than Call of Champions. However, that means that it has the crucial hardcore vote, which means you won't be short of strong online competition to play against.

#6 Dreii

Product: DreiiFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, PS VitaPublisher: EtterGenres: Multiplayer, Puzzle

We're not quite sure how to categories Dreii, other than 'a really good co-operative multiplayer puzzler'. You must drag a bunch of shapes into position using your little craft, but many instances require the assistance of passing strangers.

#7 Spaceteam

Product: SpaceteamFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Sleeping Beast GamesPublisher: Sleeping Beast GamesGenres: Multiplayer

And now for something completely different. Spaceteam requires four Bluetooth-linked Android devices to act as the (frequently malfunctioning) control panels of a doomed spaceship. You and up to three friends will need to cooperate and coordinate to avert disaster.

#8 Titanfall: Assault

Product: Titanfall: AssaultFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: NexonGenres: Strategy, MOBA

Titanfall: Assault
Arguably the first game to take the Clash Royale formula and do something new and equally special with it, Titanfall: Assault is a strategic cut above most other mobile MOBAs.

#9 World of Tanks Blitz

Product: World of Tanks BlitzFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: WargamingGenres: Action, Strategy

World of Tanks Blitz
World of Tanks was already a massively popular multiplayer game on PC and Xbox 360. Its unique brand of tactical real time tank warfare translates surprisingly well to mobile.

#10 Clash of Clans

Product: Clash of ClansFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: SupercellGenres: Strategy, Tower defence

Clash of Clans
You might think of Clash of Clans as a casual city builder, but above all it's a great multiplayer game. Its well-calibrated matchmaking and battle system, and the ability to form allegiances, are all key to its enduring appeal.

#11 Battle Bay

Product: Battle BayFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Rovio

Battle Bay
The team that brought your Angry Birds has come up with something rather special in Battle Bay - a finely poised 3D competitive shooter set on the high seas.

#12 Draw Something

Product: Draw SomethingFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: OMGPOPPublisher: ZyngaGenres: Casual, Multiplayer

Draw Something
Draw Something's popularity has waned from its stratospheric peak, but it still offers a great multiplayer experience. think of it as online Pictionary, with a sharp UI and no-fuss matchmaking.

#13 Slingshot Racing

Product: Slingshot RacingFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Snowbolt InteractivePublisher: Crescent Moon GamesGenres: Racing

Slingshot Racing
One thing mobile phones don't tend to do well is replicating the same-room-multiplayer experience of many classic arcade and console games. Slingshot Racing emulates that feeling by cramming four players around one iOS device for some tight one-button racing.

#14 Little Lords of Twilight

Product: Little Lords of TwilightFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Genres: Multiplayer, Strategy, MOBA

Little Lords of Twilight
This colourful PvP scrapper offers compellingly competitive real time strategy match-ups, but weaves in elements of the MOBA and card battling genres to make it feel more current and intuitive.

#15 Touchdowners

Product: TouchdownersFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Colin LaneGenres: Casual

Colin Lane's 2D approximation of American football is all sorts of madcap fun, but it really comes alive in local multiplayer. That's when those improbable Hail Mary passes really hit home.

Product: PKTBALLFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Laser DogGenres: Arcade, Multiplayer

This brilliant multiplayer game owes more than a small debt to air hockey. Pktball, however, ramps up the pace and the required skill level, which of course makes for a compelling same-handset multiplayer game.

#17 Afterpulse

Product: AfterpulseFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: GamevilGenres: Multiplayer, Shooter

There have been plenty of noble failures in the attempt to bring the competitive online shooter genre to mobile. Afterpulse is a rare success, adopting a third person view and pumping out some stunningly intense gun battles.

#18 Age of Wushu Dynasty

Product: Age of Wushu DynastyFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Snail GamesGenres: Multiplayer, RPG

Age of Wushu Dynasty
Age of Wushu: Dynasty does a commendable job of squishing all the main elements of the MMORPG down into a mobile package. It does so by employing the perfect amount of automation and a slick combat system.

#19 Agar.io

Product: Agar.ioFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: MiniclipGenres: Action, Multiplayer

Agar.io is massively multiplayer gaming at its purest. It pitches you into an endless abstract arena with loads of other real life players, then tasks you with eating the smaller players to grow and survive. Colourfully brutal.

#20 Battle Golf Online

Product: Battle Golf OnlineFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Colin Lane

Battle Golf Online
We loved competitive golf-battle game Battle Golf, but it badly missed an online multiplayer mode. Now along comes Battle Golf online to turn the sport of sensible trousers and hand-shakes into global warfare.

#21 Mucho Party

Product: Mucho PartyFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: GlobZGenres: Arcade, Multiplayer, Party/mini-games

Mucho Party
Now this is how you make a great same-handset multiplayer title. Mucho Party's one-on-one mini-games utilise the touchscreen brilliantly, and will probably have you fighting your opponent here in the real world too.

#22 Colt Express

Product: Colt ExpressFormats: Android, iPhonePublisher: Asmodee DigitalGenres: Card/board game

Colt Express
This brilliant boardgame conversion is uncommonly easy to pick up and instantly gratifying to play, with an appealing train robbing premise and thrillingly unpredictable gameplay. As with all boardgames, it's even better with real players, but this time you can play online against the world.

#23 Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Product: Plants vs. Zombies HeroesFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: PopCap GamesGenres: Card battler, Multiplayer

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
Put Clash Royale and Plants vs. Zombies into a pot and stir vigorously, and you'd probably get something like Plants vs Zombies: Heroes. It's a hugely entertaining casual strategy game with a hefty card-battler element - and, of course, a healthy PvP multiplayer mode.

#24 Subterfuge

Product: SubterfugeFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Ron Carmel & Noel LlopisPublisher: Snappy TouchGenres: Multiplayer, Strategy

In keeping with its name, Subterfuge plays a subtler, more drawn out multiplayer game than some of the other games on this list. It's a strategy game that's all about battling for control of a stylised map with your friends - by fair means or foul. But mainly foul.

#25 Minecraft - Pocket Edition

Product: Minecraft - Pocket EditionFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone, Xperia PlayDeveloper: MojangPublisher: MojangGenres: Adventure, Brain training

Minecraft - Pocket Edition
You can play Minecraft in single player, of course. But the spirit of the game lies very much in freeform creative collaboration, as you join your fellow players in building something wonderful (and blocky).
