The best Android games from March 2015
Silly sausages, small sports, and scary stop-overs
Ah, spring time. The evenings are staying lighter for longer, the flowers are coming out, and there's a fresh, grassy smell in the air.
It's no time to lock yourself in a darkened room and play video games, then. Far better to grab a blanket and a bottle of pop and go and play games in the park instead.
For starters, why not try these March picks from the Google Play Store?
Enjoy the sun.
Table Tennis TouchBy Yakuto - buy on Android
We're glad this one's made its way over from iOS, even if it is a year late and restricted to Android devices running Lollipop (which isn't too many of them, unfortunately).
Whenever your phone gets update, download Table Tennis Touch. It's an uncommonly polished casual sports game with a brilliant swipe control system.
Critically for any decent sport game, it also has a fine career mode.
Silly Sausage in Meat LandBy Nitrome - download on Android
Only a silly sausage would turn down the opportunity to play another great Nitrome game. Which is a pretty ropey cue to talk about Silly Sausage in Meat Land.
Imagine if Snake was let loose in a series of tight platformer levels. That's kind of how Nitrome's latest plays.
It looks gorgeous, plays better, and sports that same odd mixture of weirdness and familiarity that every other Nitrome game manages.
Frozen Synapse PrimeBy Double Eleven - buy on Android
Praise be, we have a top notch Android exclusive. Okay, so Frozen Synapse Prime is a conversion of a PS Vita game. But the point is, it's not available on iOS, so this is a mobile first.
This is an ace squad-based strategy game that makes tricky tactical play feel fluid, fast, and not-boring. Amazing.
Just about the only thing missing here is the original's multiplayer element, but who needs friends, eh?
To Be or Not To BeBy Tin Man Games - buy on Android
That is the question. What isn't in question is the brilliance of the latest game from Tin Man Games.
This isn't the sort of interactive fantasy fiction experience you'd expect from the publisher. It's based on Shakespeare's Hamlet (of course), but with a number of highly amusing modern twists stirred in.
Combined with solid gamebook mechanics, To Be or Not To Be is one of the freshest games of its type you'll find on any platform.
Jump'N'Shoot AttackBy Fullscreen, Inc - buy on Android
The name says it all, really. Jump'N'Shoot Attack us all about jumping 'n' shooting 'n' attacking.
Beyond that unhelpful summary, it's a retro-style two-button auto-runner with a difficulty level to match. Tap one button to jump, the other to shoot. Die a lot.
Fullscreen's game might be a little on the nose, but it's plenty fun with it.
FotonicaBy Santa Ragione - buy on Android
Fotonica plays like a first person Canabalt, that grandaddy of the mobile autorunner genre.
It's pretty darned intense and very immersive, particularly with its stylish wireframe visuals and bloopy electronica soundtrack.
Yes, it's basically the usual running and jumping, but a simple switch in perspective makes that process all the more thrilling.
Lego Marvel Super HeroesBy TT Games - buy on Android
Lego Marvel Super Heroes is another game that's taken inexplicably long to get to Android, but here it is, letting you crush it with Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and plenty more Marvel greats.
Unlike Lego Batman: DC Super Heroes and other Lego games on mobile, Lego Marvel Super Heroes is based on a dedicated handheld game.
This means that it's less expansive but far better suited to portable play, with bite-sized levels, a sympathetic zoomed-out view, and super-smooth gameplay.
Final Fantasy Record KeeperBy Square Enix - download on Android
A mobile-specific, free-to-play Final Fantasy? Boy, this is going to suck.
Surprisingly, Final Fantasy Record Keeper doesn't suck at all. Except for the name. That sucks big-time.
It's essentially a series of boss battles taken from classic Final Fantasy games of old, but simplified for mobile with cute retro graphics. FF fans will love it.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3By Scott Games - buy on Android
Is the Five Nights at Freddy's formula starting to grow a little stale after three entries in close succession? Possibly.
If you haven't exhausted (and exhausted yourself over) the previous two games, though, then Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is an insta-buy.
You're still dodging creepy animatronic killers, but this time you can block ventilation shafts and play distracting audio clips.
Spring NinjaBy Ketchapp Games - download on Android
We've all played more than enough Flappy Bird clones. Spring Ninja offers something a little different.
It's still about negotiating simple, tricky levels and dying an awful lot. But there's a considered pace and a novel control system at its core.
You have to wind up the tension and judge the release of your spring boots as you hop from platform to platform, which turns out to be jolly good fun.
