Battle Islands: Commander review - Clash Royale meets the Greatest Generation

For: Android   Also on: iPhone, iPad
Summary Review Screens Videos Articles Tips

Storm the beaches

Product: Battle Islands: Commanders | Publisher: 505 Games | Format: Android | Players: 1 | Version: US

Battle Islands: Commander is essentially Clash Royale with a vague World War II veneer. It's a two-lane card battler featuring all of the historic units you'd expect from the Second World War.

While there's nothing really new here, it does make an effort to set itself apart with its unique setting, characters, and weapons.

Battle Islands: Commander is highly derivative, but it's also easy to learn and well constructed, especially if you're looking for an aesthetic that varies from Clash Royale's colorful, cartoony packaging.

Attention!

Battles play out in very familiar two-lane combat. Each player is trying to protect their battleship while destroying their enemies.

You can call tanks, bazookas, flamethrowers, machine guns, and many other World War II-era units into battle to aid you.

Each unit has distinct skills that allow you to employ exciting strategies. You can use tanks to soak up damage while you send in squishier units to do some damage, or put up barbed wire to deter enemies invading on foot.

The units are varied, and their uses easy to understand, making battles quick and enjoyable.

It's easy to jump right into the game, too. While the material may already be familiar, the tutorial does an excellent job of explaining the ins and outs.

In the early hours, Commander's IAP system is quite forgiving, too. Gold is plentiful and it's easy to unlock new units and items to help you grow with the competition.

Much like other games of this nature, you will be paired up with people who are a much higher level than you, which can sometimes slow progression and make battles feel unfair.

The spoils of war

So yes, Battle Islands: Commander is Clash Royale in new clothes. It is a capable imitation, though, with well designed, re-imagined units and active servers full of other folks to challenge.

It's good fun, whether you're looking for a new alternative to Clash Royale, you're simply a CCG collector, or you want to try a new game.

A Clash Royale clone through and through, but easily a good time for CCG fans or military history buffs
