Battle Golf is simple, frantic fun... but it sure could use online multiplayer

Each week, we ask members of our App Army for their feedback on the latest and greatest releases on mobile.

One top pick this week was Colin Lane's simple yet frantic retro-styled putt 'em up, Battle Golf.

Let's see what our App Army had to say...

I already love how the icons for both Golf Is Hard and Battle Golf fit together!

So I've only played this for about one minute and I already like it a whole bunch!

I'm a little bummed out though. I selected "VS. BATTLE" thinking it would be an online multiplayer but nope, it's local multiplayer only!

Seriously though, this game would be fantastic with online multiplayer.

Really? No online?

Nope, just local multiplayer. I got a little happy thinking we were going to be able to play against each other, but then the game slapped me back to reality.

It's still a fun game though. It's just it would have been astronomically better if it had online multiplayer!

I thought it would have online too. It is named Battle Golf after all.

So far, I'm really digging this game. I really dig 8-bit style graphics and I just love the way this game was presented. It's one of those simple games that I always have a good time playing.

As the others have mentioned, it's a shame there's no online mode. Battle Golf implies you go against others which makes it all the more shocking that there's no wireless multiplayer.

Nevertheless, it's plenty of fun so far!

I don't get it... am I supposed to suck at this?

As a multiplayer game I can really see the appeal to Battle Golf. However, as a single player game there isn't much there for me.

Battle Golf doesn't have any progression. Instead it feels like another "do the same thing over and over to try to get a high score" game.

This might be the kind of game I play in a five minute coffee break at work, but as for a game I'll play for hours on end... I don't see it being one of them.

Battle Golf borrows a feather from Flappy Bird. There's no energy, coins, or new characters to buy - it's just the game itself, with is a great thing to see.

The single player game mode is just one where you try to get the highest score, which is both really fun and addictive.

This game's only big problem is the battle aspect. While the game may be called Battle Golf, in practice you can only battle on one device.

Battle Golf is a really fun game where you score as many hole in ones as possible. It's speed golf... not battle golf.

Okay, am I missing something here? This really isn't pulling me in at all.

No, that sounds about right... I'm glad I had the chance to try it but there's nothing there. The best golf game I've played on iOS is Wonderputt, but this game doesn't come anywhere close to that.

This is exactly how I picture golf being, with whales and stuff.

This is another example of a game that's simply fun to play. It's not going to win prizes for its innovation or looks, but it'll win the average gamer over with ease.

I've never played golf, but if it were even close to this game I'd be out buying some clubs and the fancy shoes right now.

This isn't rocket science - just use one button to determine the angle, and the other to determine the force used to hit the ball.

As simple as that sounds it's actually quite satisfying making those shots as time ticks away. And there's also a option to play against a friend on the same screen.

I can't even explain what exactly has me so addicted, it's just no brainier fun that I'm sure plenty of people will enjoy.

I'm afraid I'm finding this a little dull too. As far as I can see there's not much going for Battle Golf. I'm really at a loss as to why others are liking this.

That's exactly how I feel whenever I see golf of TV Kainen!

There may not be much going on, but all Flappy Bird had was tapping the screen to flap, and it spread like wildfire. It doesn't need fancy stuff to be fun.

Yes, but in Flappy Bird you had to constantly be on your toes. Battle Golf does not have the same feel to it. It's just boring to me.

I like how you can hit your opponent to take him out for a few seconds.

Battle Golf is fun, but the novelty does wear off rather quickly. It's not a game you will invest much time in since it's something you play when you have five minutes to spare.

This game is so much better when you play it with a friend. I played the versus mode with my brother while I was in a waiting room and have to say we shared a lot of laughs, especially when we intentionally aimed our golf balls to hit each other!

That's when it hits you... why oh why does this game not have online multiplayer? The name of the game seems to suggests that it would have it, but it doesn't!

The lack of an online multiplayer is this game's greatest downfall as it has the potential to be a much better game.

Battle Golf is the result of a crowd screaming to get a multiplayer version of Golf Is Hard. That's exactly what this game is. There isn't much to do in single player mode other than a basic high score chaser.

As for the gameplay, it's just randomly tapping and hoping your golf ball will land in the hole before your opponent's does.

It does try to make things more fun by adding birds that get in your way and the possibility to KO your opponent, but it's still not enough to truly impress me. It feels like it's missing additional game modes and more holes with loop-de-loops and so on.

It only supports single screen multiplayer, which is fine. As the game requires super fast skills I can understand how unstable Internet connections could be an issue.

Battle Golf isn't a hole-in-one; it's more of a birdie, but that's still enough to give it a try!

Battle Golf is a simple game but very frustrating game. It has a simple arcade feel that's easy to get to grips with but difficult to master.

The game looks fine, but the soundtrack to the game is great; adding some old-school charm to the game. I also really like how in single player the game cycles through the holes each time you play, adding a different challenge every time.

The only thing I wish this game had is online multiplayer so that you could battle online against other players.

For me, Battle Golf is a little like my childhood experience with the first Mario Party on the Nintendo 64: an embarrassing amount of dumb fun with a friend, but a painfully limp experience solo.

I think Battle Golf shows that it really doesn't take much to be able to have fun. You can get up so all manner of mischief with only two buttons!

Sadly, single player is rather dull, so you may get fed up with it after a few games. It would've been nice to have something like a campaign with a set of pre-made, slightly more challenging courses rather than a platform in front of that changes height.

I agree with the others... what Battle Golf really lacks is online multiplayer. It's crazy fun to play with someone in the same room, so why not play with strangers online?

This is one of the best rage golf games I've ever played. The gameplay is simple and funny, but it's very difficult at times.

The more you advance, the more challenging it gets. I don't know what's the second button is for in single player... did I miss the tutorial or is it only for multiplayer?

I still don't get how there isn't an online multiplayer mode for Battle Golf. It would be perfect for it.

Local multiplayer is still pretty fun though, as you can hit the opposing player with a golf ball and knock them out for a while. That makes it much more competitive and fun.

I'm a sucker for pixels and a good golf game, and Battle Golf has bits of both. It's fast-paced shots are fun and exciting, but the mechanics are in need of a little tweaking.

You lose too much time waiting for holes to appear, waiting for balls to roll across the greens, and sometimes when you make the shot it doesn't seem to give you the +5 seconds you earned.

But as a two player battle, you can forget about those things and just go crazy. It's like Soccer Physics but for the game of golf. And that's at least a birdie for me.

I absolutely agree with Curt. Pixel art is my most favourite art in the world, and although I positively suck at the real thing, I love golf in videogame form.

Everybody's Golf, Let's Golf, Mario Golf; they're all awesome in my book. And now, combining both pixels and the great sport, Battle Golf is my latest jam.

You can certainly see that it was made be the same guy who brought us the bonkers Wrassling too. Both are as great to play in longer sessions as they are in short, sharp bursts; sporting sexy pixels, and stupid, unadulterated fun.

Pixels x Golf = good times!

Now that developer, Colin Lane, has had his fill with both wrestling and golf, I'd love to see what he can do with the sport of gentlemen - cricket. My guess is something awesome!

I'd also love to see his take on baseball. Go for it Colin!
