Asphalt Overdrive is a spin off from the entertaining racing series that takes the cars and the shininess that exemplify Gameloft's driving opus and then tosses everything else out.

Rather than driving around impressive, twisting raceways in break-neck competition with other super cars, here you're trying to escape from the police in an auto-runner that lets you do spins off ramps.

It's pretty standard fare, with a few upgrades thrown in to make your car faster. It's fun enough, but it's a light slice of swipey gaming that you'll forget about it within a few seconds of putting it down.

Gun it

The game kicks off with you behind the wheel of a Ferrari, but that doesn't last very long. After the first mission you get to choose one of three impressive but slightly bog-standard vehicles. One of them's a Fiat Abarth, so I bought that.

Then you've got a bunch of missions to complete. Some of them involve you driving really quickly away from the police. Except you can't really control how fast you can go. You smash into the side of other cars or pull tricks off ramps to add to your nitro meter.

When it's full, tapping on the screen makes you shoot forwards for a while. There are nitrous bottles around the levels that let you fill up your meter as well.

There are stunt missions, and missions where you get to drive faster cars than you can afford for a bit. It's all reasonably fun popcorn gaming while it lasts. And then it stops and you don't really mind.

No pedals, all metal

Asphalt Overdrive isn't particularly fresh or exciting, but it's entertaining enough that you won't begrudge installing it on your iPad or iPhone.

If you're expecting another entry in the Asphalt series then you're going to be disappointed, but if you don't mind slogging through another endless runner, albeit one with quite shiny cars, you'll find something to enjoy here.

Asphalt Overdrive

It's not exactly Asphalt, but Overdrive is bright and bold enough that you'll enjoy it for a while at least
