After Amazon Game Studios tested the waters in August with the hidden object game Living Classics on Facebook, Amazon's recently established gaming division has made its iOS and Android debut with a rather novel-looking tower defence game.

Instead of using static towers or other similar concepts in Amazon Game Studios's Air Patriots, you take command of a fleet of aircraft with which you defend your territory.

By tracing a line on the map, you determine the flight path for each machine in your squadron. You can then redeploy your units as and when new threats arise.

It looks like a neat, fluid take on a familiar genre, with all the usual array of levelling-up upgrades and high-scoring challenges thrown into the mix.

Air Patriots is a free-to-play experience on iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire HD, though you only get access to three of the game's seven maps gratis.

If you want to try your hand at the remaining four maps, you'll have to fork out £1.99 / $2.99 for the privilege.

Kindle Fire HD owners will be delighted to read, by the way, that Air Patriots features GameCircle integration and cloud-based saving through the Whispersync service.

iOS gamers, meanwhile, will be overjoyed to discover that Air Patriots supports Apple's social gaming network, Game Center, and is optimised for devices with a Retina display.

Air Patriots is available now from the App Store [download], Google Play [download], and the Amazon Appstore [download].
