I guess it's the way of the world that a game that originated on BlackBerry - winning the grand prize in the Verizon's Apply Your Ideas contest - will make its way onto other devices.

The surprise with Abyss is the next two platforms it's been released onto are Android and Windows Mobile.

That's thanks to US publisher Concrete Software, which has taken on development duties from creator Mobigloo. Free (three games per 24 hours) and paid versions of the game are available.

Don't cast those pearls

As for the purpose of the game, it's puzzler that challenges you to rearrange various shaped pieces by sliding them horizontally and vertically to create a complete vertical path for your pearls to traverse without falling through any gaps into the abyss of the ocean.

And no one wants their pearls to fall into the abyss of the ocean.

Another neat touch is that because the levels are randomly generated, you'll never run out of game, although the levels do get more difficult as you progress.

Abyss is available now on the Android Market for $2.99, as well as via the Windows Mobile Marketplace.
