Amazon Android Appstore goes live in the US with 3,800 apps, suffers teething troubles

As predicted, Amazon has launched its Android Appstore (that’s all one word, trademark fans) today, although the honeymoon was swiftly brought to an end by thousands of Angry Birds fans trampling the server to pieces.

The reason for the stampede may well be the time-limited offer on Angry Birds Rio, which Amazon holds the exclusive rights to distribute on Android.

The game is currently free (non ad-supported) for today only as part of Amazons’ own free app a day offer.

The Appstore (nothing to do with the App Store) is still apparently accessible through the Android app, so it’s likely the web version of the store will be up shortly.

The service is currently only open to US customers (sorry everyone else), but we’ll keep an eye out for when the UK store inevitably opens its doors.
