The Keep is for people who remember fretful escapades into Dungeon Master. It is, essentially, that retro classic remade for the 3DS.

If you're not quite old enough to know what Dungeon Master is, perhaps you're familiar with the more recent Legend of Grimrock? If you're still shaking you head then it's time for some education.

These are first-person dungeon crawlers played in real-time on grid-based levels. You move through the darkness fighting enemies, avoiding traps, and solving puzzles.

The Keep adds gestures to the combat, so you swipe at various heights to attack enemies and bypass their defences.

Another addition is found on the touchscreen. Here, there is a 5x4 grid that allows you to chain together runes and cast powerful spells.

Being retro in style and spirit, The Keep is designed to test veteran adventurers. However, there are multiple difficulties to hopefully suit everyone, and each has a permadeath option.

If you're up for it, you'll be able to see how you fare in The Keep when it comes to the 3DS eShop this summer. Check out its website for updates.
