[Update] How to get Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
Updated on April 15th, at 11:23: Nintendo has since sent out the download codes for Mewtwo so it's possible to get this critter in your game. We've updated the final steps of the guide with full details.

Original story follows…

The fantastic Super Smash Bros launched on Wii U last week, which means it's now possible for gamers in Europe to add the psychic Pokemon brawler Mewtwo to their roster on both versions of the game.

That's because Nintendo's running a promotion where you can get a code to unlock the character, but only if you register both editions of the game on Club Nintendo.

Don't worry if you don't have a Wii U, as Nintendo will eventually sell the final character as downloadable content on the eShop. But for now, this is the only way to get Mewtwo in your game.

So follow our guide before before 23:59 CET on 31st March 2015 and you'll be ready to get your free fighter.

Step 1

Your first step is to buy both versions of the game. That's right - the only way to get Mewtwo at this point is to purchase Super Smash Bros. on both Wii U and 3DS and register them on the same Club Nintendo account.

Club Nintendo

Next, head off to your region's official Nintendo website and find the Club Nintendo section. Log in, and hit the Product Registration button. You'll be presented with a text field.

Here, enter the code that came with your copy of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U or Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. It'll be inside the box on a piece of red paper and you'll need to scratch off the silver foil to get your code.

Survey

Once the code is in, you'll now need to finish a short survey about how you found out about the game to complete he registration. So waltz through that until you get to the final page.

Now, repeat this process with the other version of the game.

eShop

Did you buy one, or both versions of Super Smash Bros as a digital download off the eShop? That's fine, just head into the My Account section of Club Nintendo and choose My Registered Games and Systems.

Find the game in the list and click 'Claim Stars for this download'. You'll now need to do a very similar survey to the one above before the game counts as registered.

Promotion

After both games are registered, you'll see a button about the promotion with two green ticks beneath the Wii U and 3DS games. Click on this to take part in the promotion.

You'll need to accept the terms and conditions, and if you're not sick of surveys at this point there's an optional feedback form on this promotion. After this, you'll get a confirmation page.

Final

And for the final step: wait! As it says on the site, "You've successfully claimed your free download codes for Mewtwo, which we'll send to you via email when distribution starts in spring 2015."

You can also claim your free soundtrack CD, but it will also be posted in early 2015.

01

And we're back! It's been four months but the codes are finally here. Grab the 3DS code from your inbox, and update Super Smash Bros to the latest version.

It should ask you to update the game when you next load it up. If not, just try to play online to connect to the Nintendo Network. This will force it to check for an update and then will automatically update the game.

You'll know you're on the right version if it says "Notices & AOC Shop" on the bottom screen on the main menu. Hit Y, the hit Y again to open the AOC shop.

02

Once you're in the store, simply hit 'Redeem Code' and enter the code from your email. In no time at all, Mewtwo will be added to your account and a very tiny file will download to your 3DS.

Now you can fight with this psychic Pokemon to your heart's content.
