In the penultimate issue of Nintendo Power, it's revealed that developer WayForward is working on a brand-new Shantae game for the 3DS eShop.
It's called Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. In it, the belly-dancing half-genie hero forges an uneasy alliance with her old nemesis, Risky Boots.
Stripped of magic powers in her last adventure, Shantae can no longer do a quick jig to morph into a monkey or mermaid. Instead, she'll spend the adventure unlocking and upgrading pirate weapons like swords and cannons.
This swashbuckling armoury also give Shantae access to new areas. Throwing knives, for example, lodge into walls to create handy footholds for climbing, and a flintlock pistol can trigger faraway switches.
As ever, the game will feature inter-connected levels with non-linear paths, meaning you can explore this Metroidvania world at your leisure. It will also have a better map system than before (thank all that is holy) and hidden paths.
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse will hit the 3DS eShop sometime in 2013. It will also have 3D effects similar to WayForward's last eShop hit, Mighty Switch Force.
Shantae, if you were looking for a history lesson, started life as a Game Boy Color game. The series was revived on DSiWare as Shantae: Risky's Revenge. We called that game's iOS edition a "terrific port for this substantial side-scroller that comes highly recommended".
